Shelterbox is an innovative Cornish charity that rapidly reacts to worldwide catastrophies with disaster relief through sending out big green boxes packed with everything a displaced family needs to survive.
In September Shelterbox put out a major appeal for help that Classic Sailing are responding to in a number of ways. There has been a succession of catastrophic large scale disasters to hit the Pacific, leaving thousands without shelter. The series of devasting Tsunamis, typhoons and earthquakes hit the region leaving whole communities in need of help. Shelterbox are currently operating in the field with volunteers deploying their life saving green boxes in:
Sumatra – Earthquake 2009
Samoa - Tsunami 2009
Phillipines – Typhoon 2009
Niger – Flood 2009
Our £100 donation to Shelterbox can only really happen via you, but if you were planning to do a RYA course we hope you chose to sail with us so we can do some good with your booking.
To encourage you further we have some RYA courses with £100 off and some training grants too. We will still honour the £100 donation to Shelterbox if you book a course on special offer with us.
List of RYA courses in October & November on Eve of St Mawes
For anyone who was thinking of booking a RYA Day Skipper course this Autumn we can also help any Cornish residents (over 16 and in employment or self employment) gain a training grant towards their course, with help from Cornwall Marine Network training advisors.
Training Grants for Cornish Residents
Sailors really appreciate SHELTERClassic Sailing skippers and co-founders have always been drawn to what Shelterbox do. There are many parallels between living on a boat and living in a tent and once you have spent hours completely out in the elements at sea, everyone on board really appreciates the concept of shelter.
Down below on ‘Eve of St Mawes’ we might be enjoying a feast of fresh Cornish seafood and a glass of wine, but the most important aspect to our safe wooden cocoon, is that we have a deck over our heads, sleeping bags, a stove, fuel and water tanks. Most our guest crew have enough imagination to appreciate how appalling it would be to try and survive outdoors without a tent and the vital equipment that Shelterbox supplies to disaster areas.
So we can think of at least 5 good reasons to book a RYA Sailing Course on our pilot cutter ‘Eve of St Mawes’
1 Help Shelterbox by doing something you really wanted to do anyway.
2 Save upto £120 by applying to Classic Sailing for a training grant for Day Skipper Course (must be 16+, working at least 8 hours a week, and living in Cornwall)
3 Learn to sail (RYA Competent Crew) a beautiful wooden pilot cutter built by Cornish boatbuilding company Working Sail – instead of a modern yacht.
4 Learn to skipper a 14 ton gaff cutter with blocks and tackles as your first ‘command’ (RYA Day Skipper)
5 Get back to fundamentals and remind yourself how important SHELTER, WATER & FOOD are by living communally on a 38’ boat.
Co-founder of Classic Sailing Ltd Debbie Purser is planning to sleep on deck of pilot cutter ‘Eve of St Mawes’ on Thurs 19th November 2009 in aid of Shelterbox.
If you can't afford to sail with us this autumn but you want to support our fundraising, please sponsor Debbie to brave the November weather during our last RYA sailing course of the year.
