Cornish Culture - reaching far & wide

Our pilot cutter 'Eve of St Mawes' flys the St Piran Flag. The people of Cornwall are a community with a distinctive culture, partly shaped by our remote location in the  far west of Britain - surrounded on three sides by sea. We always have been, and always will be 'Cornish' in our hearts. Native Cornish, Cousin Jacks, enthusiastic in-comers, Cornwall University students, one and all. If you live and work here - the place will get under your skin. When we last asked our sailing holiday customers if they had a desire to live in Cornwall, 81% said yes. We are proud of Cornwall and its heritage and traditions. Basically it means the locals can't stop talking to you about the place !

Seafaring Nation - Cornwall's Rich Maritime Heritage

Life was tough in remote Cornwall and throughout history her sons and daughter took to the sea to find their fortunes. Miners chased gold in the South African mines, and mining engineers set up home all over the world. Merchant Ships sailed the seven seas and much of our non native plant collections came home to lush and mild Cornwall by sailing ship.

If you sail with us on 'Eve of St Mawes' we can make the historic landscapes come alive and help you understand what shapes the distinctive Cornish culture.

Landscapes, Seascapes & Artists

Wild seas, fast moving clouds, dark brooding cliffs, ancient field boundaries, tin mines, crystal clear air quality, translucent seas, sailing ships and fishing villages have lured artists here for centuries. Art scenes in Newlyn and St Ives still have a strong influence. Newlyn School of Art Gallery, The Tate in St Ives, St Ives School of Art, Barbera Hepworth Gallery attract art lovers from all over the world. Paintings by artists like Kurt Jackson, Paul Leuwin, Neil Pinkett, and Robert Jones sell for eye watering prices, and there are enough quality galleries in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly  to make a special trip to the County worth while.

Of course you could spend a few days sailing on 'Eve of St Mawes' and sketch or paint a few seascapes yourself, before hitting the galleries. Our skippers know most the good galleries and we can recommend a few painting or printing holiday workshops from first hand experience. One of Eve's  skippers Debbie is a keen artist and many of our guests have been inspired to pick up a pencil or try a watercolour painting whilst at anchor.
