Bits enjoyed most - "getting involved, learning sailing, meeting the other guests and crew, delicious meals, scenery, wonderful anchorages overnight, watching wildlife, climbing mast and bowsprit and steering." Anne S.

There are many reasons why we have three tall ships, Irene, Lord Nelson and Morgenster heading South to the Canaries Islands this winter.

  • Winter sunshine with typical average temperatures of 70 degrees F (21 degrees C) in January.
  • Good prevailing winds;
  • There are excellent sailing winds between the mountainous islands, and quieter areas closer inshore.
  • A group of five islands with a mix of day and longer passages between them with the deep seas between giving you some really thrilling sailing.
  • Dolphins and whales live and migrate through the Canary Islands. .
    • Many cetacean research vessels study here and there is a breeding ground for pilot whales off Tenerife.
  • Experience a wonderful starry night sky under sail or a quiet stroll on deck in a remote anchorage studying the expanse of the universe in all its glory above your head.
    • Many of the world’s astronomy telescopes are here in the mountains as the night skies are so unpolluted and excellent for astronomical observations.
  • Walking in the Western Canaries has come a long way in recent years with clear access and good pathways.
    • The surprisingly lush vegetation, pine trees and terraces of bananas and many crops and local fauna make for interesting walks ashore.

Head south until the butter melts.

The Atlantic Islands of Canary Islands sit on the latitude where the butter melts and historically Trans-Atlantic sailors turned westwards with the trade winds. Staging posts for square rig sailors and yachtsmen through the centuries, these mountainous island landfalls with lush vegetation are a welcome reward on our 10-14 day ocean passages.

There is more to becoming a blue water sailor than swapping oilskins for shorts, but a winter suntan and some ocean miles in bare feet on wooden decks certainly helps get you in the ocean wandering mood. Ocean sailors happily adapt to a watch routine and the constant motion of the ship day and night. Experience all the ships moods from glassy calms to white capped swells launching flying fish from crest to crest.

How we explore the Canary Islands on tall ships.

All voyages aim to give you a relaxing but interesting time.

  • The sailing
    • No experience is required on any of these voyages.
    • There is a mixture of sailing, mostly by day but at a night passage will also give you the unforgettable experience of the amazing night sky.
  • Explore ashore
    • Taking trips ashore to explore the towns and islands is a key feature of the voyages. The ships have experience of either organising a group trip shore or advising on the best places to visit.
  • Social life
    • Every meal becomes a social event and after a first class supper the evening is yours to enjoy. If in port a visit to a local hostelry will give you a flavour of local life. Staying onboard and just chilling and relaxing with friends takes a lot of beating.
  • Whales and Dolphins
    • The South West of Tenerife,  Los Gigantes, region is internationally known as a permanent home and migratory temporary feeding ground for a big selection of whales and dolphins.
    • The species you are most likely to encounter are  the Bottlenosed Dolphin and the Long Finned Pilot Whale. Please note it is never possible to 100% guarantee sighting of whales and dolphins as they are free to come and go as we would want them to. However when our ships have visited this area in the past they have never been disappointed.
