Pilot cutters playing nicely now

The estuary of Cornwall's River Fal was host this summer to the sort of gathering not seen since the days of the working pilot cutters.
No fewer than 11 pilot cutters arrived for the second Annual Pilot Cutter Review, 8-10 June, a figure nearly doubled from last year. The event was conceived last year by Adam Purser of Portscatho-based sail-training and charter firm Classic Sailing, with a view to building bridges between owners of historic pilot cutters and newer pilot cutter yachts: in die past, the relationship has been a little strained. Diplomatically, as well as in terms of sheer participation, the event was a great success.
Five historic pilot cutters and six pilot cutter yachts sailed convivially. In the words of boatbuilder Luke Powell, "It's more fun if we play together."
The historic owners have reciprocated the hospitality by inviting the newer boats to the Bristol Channel Race which takes place out of Barry over August Bank Holiday weekend.
