I saw three ships

This is the start of a popular English Christmas Carol that appears to have come from Derbyshire.
Seeing as how Derbyshire has no coast line one can understand the fact that of the three ships mentioned had only two people in them, Mary and the infant Christ.
However other sources state that it refers to the three wise men visiting Bethlehem but again the nearest see is 20 miles away so perhaps they crossed the Dead Sea on their way to Bethlehem.

What is for sure is that it is an old Carol with many different variations and is as popular today as it has always been.

If you want to see three ships on Christmas day in the morning then you probably need to head for the Canary Islands in the town of Santa Cruz de La Pama . Bessie Ellen is likely to be there and a great festive day it will be.

In 1997 I was there on the Malcolm Miller as the bosun. There were three other tall ships in port and much ship visiting went on. For Christmas Eve some of us went to the Midnight Mass at the large local Catholic church. Now I am not religious at all but it was fascinating to watch and sing with the local inhabitants. The service was mostly in Latin but also parts were said in Spanish, German and English for the benefit of us visiting sailors. Even if you are not religious yourself it is still worth the experience and a night not to be forgotten.
