Classic Sailing is an established adventure sailing company that operates sailing holidays and RYA courses on its own pilot cutter ‘Eve” in Cornwall and markets voyages on traditional boats and tall ships around the world.
Required is a full time skipper for 38ft Pilot Cutter ‘Eve”.
Approx 3 weeks skippering,1 week off, not more than 14 days skippering consecutively where possible In the winter there will be office and refit work. The role is very intensive as our skipper sails with up to 6 guests and no mate. Voyages can involve teaching RYA courses up to Day Skipper on 15 ton gaff cutter (51ft overall), themed voyages, rowing expeditions, coastal walks and cooking high quality meals.
After a 2-3 week sea training/familiarisation period with existing skipper. Good people and leadership skills are required as you will be running the majority of voyages peak season.
An opportunity for a sail training mate to make the first step up to command a small gaff rigged vessel, or for an existing skipper/instructor to move into traditional boat field.
Key skills: RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and commercial endorsement Previous employment as a skipper or RYA yacht instructor OR experience as a 1st mate working with participating customers on sail training vessels or holiday charter vessels. A strong desire to be a skipper of a traditionally rigged boat. Full Driving Licence: The boat runs from St Mawes but our office is 5 miles away in Portscatho.
Fitness – Willing to row our harbour tender, work aloft and out on the bowsprit, and accompany guests on coastal walks. There are no winches on Eve except our manual anchor windlass.
Desirable: RYA cruising instructor is preferred but we can help you gain this. An interest in marine wildlife, maritime history & traditional boats, boat building or anything that enhances the holiday experience. World travel experience is an asset ! Decent cooking skills. Previous experience of gaff rigged or heavy displacement vessels. Instructing or teaching skills.
Future Career Prospects with Classic Sailing This is a full time post—with regular staff appraisals and career development advice. After an initial three month probationary period there will be a review after 6 months and then on an annual basis. Former Eve skippers have gone on to run sail training organisations as senior skipper / operations managers; teach RYA yacht master courses in the South Atlantic. Winter employment includes work in the office marketing tall ships, assisting in the sales office,developing Eve’s voyage products in Cornwall and the practical refit on Eve of St Mawes.
Classic Sailing has weathered the recession and experienced good business growth for 2 years and is looking for a skipper interested in a longer future with the company, whether their interest lies in boat operations/learning to run an exciting business or a combination.
