Lizzie May and Eve of St Mawes Pilot Cutters

Luke PowellMany people have asked me about Luke Powell the designer and builder of Eve of St Mawes and his second boat Lizzie May shown above. He has since then built a replica of an Isles of Scilly Pilot Boat called Agnes, circa 1850 and 46ft long on deck. She was launched in My 2003 and has crossed the Atlantic to her new home near New York. Agnes has now returned from America having completed two Atlantic Crossings and is owned by her builder Luke Powell. In the summer of 2003 Luke and his team started to Build Hespar and launched her in the summer 2004. Next in Line was Ezra, another Scillonian Pilot Cutter that is was completed on Schedule in March 2006. We offered voyages on Ezra in Scotland in the summer of 2006, and they sold out.. Luke is currently building Tallulah of 44ft for private usage of a couple in Chichester. Due to launch in the Spring of 2008. For More information on Luke Powell follow this link. Working Sail

The following is a copy of a letter I wrote to an American Enquirer.

Dear Malcolm,
Thank you for your enquiry regarding the designer and builder of Eve of St Mawes.

If you want the best most authentically traditionally built wooden boat I can thoroughly recommend Luke Powell the designer and builder of Eve. Debbie and I had no hesitation on purchasing Eve. During construction if we wanted something done internally to the layout we would sketch our what we wanted. A few days later we would return and Luke had sketched out in wood what we wanted in the right places. This allowed us to see if it was what we really wanted. We then left him to create it in his own style which allowed his skills as a craftsmen to flourish unimpaired by over exactness or misplaced ideas. The result is a boat that has character that our guests fall in love with and that brings great happiness to all who sail on her.

Luke has many talents and if you get to know him and see some of his oil paintings you will see they have a chunky 3D effect that is reflected in his ability to create 3 dimensional objects.

Eve is wintered at Gweek Quay Boatyard where Luke is building Agnes a replica Scillonian Pilot Cutter, at 46ft, she would be ideal for you. Watching him work is a pleasure to behold, large planks of wood are transformed into elegant parts of Agnes. I shall miss watching progress during our summer sailing season.

I have sailed on Eve in company with our sister ship Lizzie May and remember it as one of the best couple of days of last summer. They are seaworthy, powerful, robust, gracious and stunningly beautiful boats. If I could afford another one I would buy Agnes.

I have spoken at length with the owners of Lizzie May and they feel the same way about them as I do, full of enthusiasm and proud to be the owner of a Luke Powell Pilot Cutter. It feels like he has chosen us to be the lucky ones.

If you would like to sail on Eve to see how good they are we would be glad to have you on board, I enclose our brochure with sailing schedule and prices.

I believe Agnes will be even better than Luke’s previous boats and I shall be extremely jealous of who ever is lucky enough to own.

Yours sincerely

Adam Purser 8th January 2002
