A Unique RYA Sailing School Dates 2010

Eve's Sailing School is a recognised RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Training Centre offering practical sailing courses on gaff rigged wooden boats with bowsprits.

Eve is a Gaff Cutters with Character

'Eve of St Mawes'  is a traditionally built 38' pilot cutter based in the seafaring village of St Mawes in Cornwall. On her doorstep are unspoilt coves, wooded creeks, wild and windy headlands, fishing ports steeped in history. The Atlantic Ocean is nor far away and brings an abundance of marine wildlife.

Why Boats with Bowsprits are Better

Our RYA courses are 6 days long rather than the minimum 5 days so you have more time to enjoy sailing a classic boat. The skills you learn on RYA courses combine traditional seamanship with modern technology like radar and GPS, with the added bonus of a holiday on a beautiful boat.

The advantages of taking an RYA course aboard a traditional boat are many fold:
Eve is great for beginners. Wthl long deep keels Eve has a sea kindly motion, un-cluttered decks and high sides so you can walk rather than crawl down the deck in rough weather.

Without the mechanical advantage of winches you are more aware of the forces of nature. You must work with the wind rather than fight it, so that you learn sail balance and trim more instinctively.

Eve of St Mawes is 51' from the boom overhanging her stern to the end of her bowsprit, so you are learning to sail a much bigger vessel than a standard sailing school yacht. For easy manouvring you can sail under a reefed mainsail and jib but Eve can spread their wings and set up to 5 sails. Eve turns heads wherever she go, so its great for your ego and pride.

A bowsprit out at the front encourages forethought when planning to come alongside a berth.

For potential skippers, the stable motion of a deep keeled vessel and a large chart table makes learning to navigate on the move a lot easier than on many modern vessels. Manouvring under power you learn that these vessels will glide effortless and gently to a pontoon or quay.

Success aboard Eve comes with a sense of achievement unmatched on a modern yacht. Your colours fly just that little bit higher.

We can also offer the following;

  • Fast Practical Pilotage Weekends
