The RYA Basic Navigation and Safety Course at Eve' Sailing School ashore.
This course provides an introduction to the basic skills required before taking a small boat to sea or taking an active part in running a boat.
Introduction
The Basic Navigation and Safety Course is a new shore based course organised by the RYA Royal Yachting Association. Like it says on the tin its an introduction for any one going on the water, dinghy and keel boat sailors, power boat users, leisure sea fishermen and anglers, divers, boat masters all on inshore waters. No previous experience is assumed or required for the course.
This is an entry level course and we believe it is essential that you understand how to practically run your boat so that you don't get into difficulties. During the course you will cover a basic introduction to charts and associated publications and the tools of the trade. Once these ideas are understood these tools will help you make safe decisions about where and when to go.
The course illustrates what buoys look like and what they tell, which is the safe way and which is the way not to go. It covers the basics of navigation to tell you where are on the water using traditional and satellite positioning. It includes a lot on safety, use of engines, communications, how to anchor and why and when, the tides, and avoiding other vessels.
Weather is a primary consideration on the water and there are lots of ways of keeping up to date with the current weather forecasts and how to use them.
The course culminates in giving you the ability to make simple passage plans leave and enter ports and vastly enhance your ability to voyage at sea safely.
This is an ideal stepping stone to the RYA Day Skipper Theory Course and we make learning it not only useful but also great fun. We go to sea for enjoyment so we are not going to ruin it by running a boring course!
The Basic Navigation and Safety Course is perfect for anybody who sails a small boat close to land, for divers, fishermen, inshore racers, power boaters and jet skiers.
