St Mawes

St Mawes is at the heart of Classic Sailing operations. Eve of St Mawes our first boat is based in St Mawes Harbour and St Mawes Quay is where our guests join and depart Eve's voyages.

Adam and Debbie live in St Mawes in the house Adam grew up in so the ties to the village go back a long way. Adam used to go to Falmouth Grammar School by school boat every term day. If he was lucky a couple of times each winter term the sea would be to rough to go to school!

Like a lot of people in Cornwall Adam had to leave the county to gain a higher education. (There has been a university in Cornwall for only four years.) Only returning to St Mawes to start Classic Sailing in 1997.

St Mawes is a very special village, in tourist terms it is a quaint Cornish fishing village dominated by St Mawes Castle that was built for Henry VIII in 1564AD.

Today we still have a fishing industry but there are no young people taking up fishing as a career, so how much longer we can keep fishing going is a moot point. The seas of the South West England have and still are rich in diversity for fish that can be caught for consumption. We are beginning to see a better approach to sustainable fishing and hopefully this may make a career in fishing more attractive again.

The village has many holiday and retirement homes and our house prices are some of the most expensive in the country making it hard for working people to get on the housing ladder.

Adam is on the St Just in Roseland Parish Council that includes St Mawes and he hopes that the Council can make it possible for more affordable housing to be built.

The village has a great community atmosphere with many societies and activities. There is a village Memorial Hall were plays, Pantomimes, sports, jumble sales and other activities take place.

We have four hotels, three pubs, two licensed clubs, three restaurants in addition to the pubs, an excellent Spar shop, award winning butcher, baker, chemist, post office, and various gift shops and galleries.
