Falkland Islands

Falkland Islands

A mecca for bird watchers, nature lovers, astronomers and photographers, this rather famous British outpost is well worth a longer visit if you have the time. For those who were involved in the Falklands War it maybe a place they must visit for more emotional reasons, and for those of us who remember the daily news reports from the war, the place names seem very familiar.

Photographers, Artists and Astronomers

The Falklands sit on the same latitude as the Southern tip of New Zealand and Cape Horn is not much further South so it is windy, but the clarity of the light is great for artists and photographers and the night skies unpolluted by artificial light for star gazers. There are elephant seals, penguins, sea lions, fur seals and beuautiful wild beaches

Battlefield tours & Maritime History

The fiercest fighting in the 1980s Falklands War was on the hills around Port Stanley so you can walk at your own pace around Longdon, Mount Harriet or Tumbledown - or arrange a local guide. There are ship wrecks in the Falklands Sound and the Falkland Island Museum is worth a visit.

Accommodation on the Falklands

The best way to understand an island community is to stay in a locals home and there are planty of homestays, farms and B & B accommodation on the Falklands. Again the Falkland Islands Tourist website has the best accommodation listings with photos and e mail / phone contacts.  http://www.falklandislands.com/sections/stay-here

Getting There

Europa specialises in some of themost tricky joining ports out of the whole Classic Sailing Fleet so you do need to think a bit laterally as there are quite a few ways to get to and from South America, but the options to get out to the Falklands in time for your voyage are more limited.

The excellent Falklands tourism website www.falklandislands.com has a summary of all the possible routes into the Falklands from UK, Brize Norton; Buenos Aires,Argentina; Santiago or Punta Arenas in Chile, Los Angeles, Rio de Janerio, Sydney, Aukland, Miami, Toronto with return flight estimates (updated Jan 2011)....but basically all these flights will connect to the once a week Saturday LAN Chile flight from Santiago, via Punta Arenas.  (There is one flight a month which does stop in Rio Gallegos, Argentina.)

The RAF flight from UK takes 20 hrs via Ascension Island and is the most expensive option, especially as the voyage ends in Argentina and you still have to get back home.

Falklands – Ushuaia Voyage (Sat 10 Dec 2011 to Thu 12 Jan 2012)
There are three ways to get to the Falklands
1                     Book the discounted combination two voyage option and save on flights and sail Europa to Falklands from Montevideo and then start your Antarctic Voyage as a seasoned sailor.
2                     Fly to Falklands via South America (only one Saturday flight a week)
3                     Fly to the Falklands on RAF plane from Brize Norton in UK (twice a week) but you still need to get back from Argentina, South America.

Classic Sailing and Europa Operators will continue to check for best deals for flights and if you look up the voyage you are interested in on www.classic-sailing.co.uk and check our port information for the Falklands it will have out latest travel tips. Or phone us on UK tel: 0044 (0)1872 580022 as we get feedback from our customers too.
Currently we have no civilian timetable for RAF flights (prices  about £1100 single and £2200 return) and would consider the weekly Saturday Lan Chile flight to Mount Pleasant from Santiago, via Punta Arenas to be the more reliable and cheaper option.
It is vital that your do not miss the flight from Punta Arenas to the Falklands on 10th December, and you may like to consider a strategic stop over in Santiago or Punta Arenas, in case there are any luggage problems or delays on the Trans Atlantic flight or the domestic flight.
Another alternative would be to travel to the Falklands on the Saturday before, and spend a week exploring this unique group of islands.
For flights into one country and out of another we recommend you use a flight broker like Dial a flight as they can mix and match different airlines.
Tip for flight searches
Use international airport code MPN for Mount Pleasant Airport rather than Falklands in any airline search, as the term Falklands is still a contraversial one, as Argentina still call the islands the Malvinas.

This is booking it as 2 separate return flights and a single to the Falklands, plus you still need to travel from Ushuaia in Argentina across the border to Punta Arenas to fly back (bus and ferry). This is not the cheapest quote but may help show the breakdown of costs if you are planning any other travel in South America.

Alternatively you may find a cheap return flight to either Montevideo in Uruguay or Buenos Aries in Argentina. There are only flights to Ushuaia from Buenos Aries in Argentina but the city is on the other side of the River Plate estuary so there are regular ferry services between the 2 cities
Ferry Details
See www.buquebus.com for ferry and bus timetables and booking. There is a choice of a direct port to port ferry service from Montevideo to Buenos Aires which takes about 3 hours, or a bus from Montevideo to Colonia (2hrs) and a connecting ferry from Colonia to Buenos Aries (3hrs)
Remember if you take a taxi to the airport there are two airports in Buenos Aires City. You need Ezeiza International for trans Atlantic Flights and Jorge Newbery Aero Park for domestic flights within Argentina.
