Horta

Faial is the most cosmopolitan of the central Azores islands and also one of the most beautiful with its gently sloping pastureland that gives way to steeper hills atop which sits the main volcanic crater that dominates the island. The natural landscape is unspoilt and the undersea volcanic caves hide shoals of colorful fish. On Faial, you can enjoy a lively, activity filled holiday in addition to discovering the delights of Horta, a vibrant city renowned for its whitewashed houses.

Getting there and away

Horta Airport (HOR) on Faial is the airport to fly into, to join our voyages in The Azores. There is a useful website, and below you will find a link to a PDF detailing information on specific voyages.

Regular flights link Lisbon to Faial and flights take about 2 hours. SATA, the regional airline, flies daily to Horta from S. Miguel and Terceira. A few different ferries connect Horta with Sao Jorge and Pico. The duration of the journey can depend upon the company used. Horta is also a port of call for a ship that carries passengers and cargo between the Portuguese mainland and the islands. Rental cars, taxis and local bus lines are all options for getting around the island. The main bus stop in Horta is at Avenida Marginal. Minibuses cover the central area of Horta.

Horta is used by transatlantic sailors as a good safe place to break their journey. This is reflected in the cosmopolitan feel to the town, and the many paintings that are now infamous in and around the harbour.

All flights from the UK will go via Lisbon, of which there are several a day. However, there is only one flight a day from Lisbon to Faial, which is a morning flight. This means that you will almost certainly need to have an overnight stay in Lisbon.

 Horta harbour is approximately 10km from the airport on the island of Faial, Azores.

We would recommend taking a taxi to the harbour, and would advise that you fix the price before you depart. That way there won't be any surprises.
