Lisbon
Lisbon is both the capital and largest city in Portugal. Once the launch pad for many of the voyages of discovery (notably Vasco da Gama's epic journey to India), Lisbon was the first true world city, the capital of an empire spreading over all continents, from South America (Brazil) to Asia (Macao, China; Goa, India). It is forever known as the city of the explorers. Wander through the side streets, relax and have an esspresso in one of the many delightful cafes and bars, and explore the cities fine museums, culture and history.
Getting there and away is easy. Lisbon International Airport (LIS) , also known as Lisbon Portela Airport is approximately 4km from the city centre, and can be reached by public bus or taxi. Many airlines fly into and out of Lisbon, including the national carrier TAP Portugal, as well as budget airlines such as Easyjet.
Click here for a citymap including the airport.
Bus
There is a bus network from the airport that offers services to passengers who are travelling to various destinations from the airport.
A ticket to the city center should cost €1.35. One also has an option of purchasing an all day ticket at €3.35.
- AEROBUS: Linking the Airport to downtown Lisbon and Cais do Sodre
(every 20 minutes from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.)
- CARRIS BUSES: No. 5, 8, 22, 44, 45, 83;
Taxi
Outside the terminal buildings one is able to obtain taxi services. These generally charge an average of €10 to the city center. Some of the taxis have meters in them. They charge a minimum of €2.35 during the day and €2.50 at night. Double check the price before getting in. Taxis are obliged by law to advertise the prices, and do not pay extra for luggage. The meter fare is the price to pay.
Though some of the taxi drivers may take longer routes to keep the meter running, the trip should take an average of 15 minutes to the city center. Sometimes is better to pre-book your transfer
and there are many to choose from on the internet.
