Madeira

Madeira is a small archipelago in the Atlantic, which includes Madeira, Porto Santo, the Desertas and the Selvagens. It is an autonomous region of Portugal. Portuguese is spoken, but also Spanish, French, English and German. The € Euro is the currency. Madeira is the largest island in the group, and is of volcanic origin, so sharp peaks, lush valleys and deep water. This combination allows an amazing variety of shrubs and plants to thrive, and over 200 species of birds have been identified here.
From Madeira it is approx:
500miles to the Azores,1250miles to Falmouth, 300 miles to the Canary Islands, 1050 miles to Cape Verde Islands and 2800 miles to Antigua.
Click here for a map of the island detailing the airport and port.
Madeira Airport is 9 miles from Funchal, which is the main city and port on Madeira. The most economical way to get from the airport to the city is by bus, and they depart at regular times throughout the day. Taxi can be quite expensive, but more convenient. Taxi may be the only option if you are arriving at night. As with any taxi in any country, check the price plan before you accept the ride.
TAP Air Portugal fly to and from Madeira, connecting in Porto or Lisbon if flying from other countries. They also have some direct flights. Easyjet in the UK has direct flights in the summer months.
