Liverpool City of Culture 2008

The Waterfront of Liverpool has reached iconic fame with world heritage status for its famous buildings and docks. A Huge fleet of sailing ships gathered on the Mersey for the start of the tall ships race will hark back to its heydays when merchant fleet traded all over the world transporting goods under sail. In 2008 Liverpool is celebrating an 800 year history as a port;  the excitement of hosting the Tall Ships Race and a huge investment in its waterfront area as part of its well earned accolade as European City of Culture 2008.

“It’s not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me....” goes the song. The Parade of Sail out of Liverpool may be an emotional moment for some, but we think the race route is a cracking adventure. The fleet will head North past the Isle of Man and through the narrow and often rough North Channel between Ireland and Scotland. Sweeping close around the Outer Hebrides and then tall ships race 2008 Pelican of londonbetween Shetland and Orkney you are almost re creating a Viking raid in reverse as you head even further north and east for the big open crossing to Norway. If you have time to reflect – imagine the same journey in an open Viking longship.

Maloy

Maloy is a well chosen host port for the end of the first race. It is the smallest seafaring town to every hold a major tall ship event but its more intimate scale will create a special atmosphere. Maloy is the biggest fishing harbour in Norway so the locals will understand the challenges you have undergone to get there and are looking forward to giving you a sailors welcome. The spectacular mountains and fjord scenery around Maloy is the most visited tourist destination in Europe, so you are at the heart of the Norwegian fjords – voted by National Geographic as one of the top 10 places to see in a lifetime.
