A Book to Dream or Scheme
If you are really tempted by an Antarctic Adventure Expedition on sailing ship Bark Europa, now or in the future, then this great 150 page hardback book illustrating one of her sailing expeditions in 2007 should get you in the mood.
The Lure of Antarctica
Classic Sailing’s director Debbie Purser sailed on the same epic 5500 mile voyage as professional photographer Thijs Heslenfeld when he was preparing images for this unusual view of Antarctica, South Georgia and the wild Southern Ocean. The view is as seen and experienced from a 1912 three masted sailing ship Bark Europa. If you want to find out even more about the places the ship typically visits and life on board then ring Debbie at Classic Sailing and she can tell you from first hand experience.
About the Photographer
Thijs was always out there on deck with his camera in the storms, looking for human interest amongst the guest crew in the middle of the night and sharing the whole crews fear and wonder in iceberg infested seas. Almost up the rigging as fast as Debbie when humpback whales came to play or freezing with the rest of us in a zodiac watching a leopard seal hunt penguins, Thijs always found the unusual shot as a bunch of strangers from many countries became seasoned tall ships crew exploring the driest, coldest and windiest continent on earth. The photos speak of shared and adventures and personal experiences with wildlife, weather and landscapes that they will never forget,
Bark Europa: Square Rigger Amongst the Ice
What he captured was more than a ‘coffee table’ book of full page images of a pristine wilderness. His book
Cold illustrates the reality of an adventure that you can still experience as working ships crew (22 day Antarctic adventure sailing expeditions in 2009 and 2010 from Classic Sailing) – on a vessel that puts you in touch with the achievements of polar explorers like Shackleton - in a wilderness setting that will mark you emotionally for life. Get close to the real Antarctica.

BOOK REVIEW – Wanderlust Magazine
“Anyone who has been to Antarctica always says how hard it is to describe its mysticism and harsh beauty to others….I’ve seen more than my fair share of (admittedly beautiful) books filled with posing penguins and cracked ice sheets. This book has those too, but Dutch photographer Thijs Heslenfeld has succeeded where I feel others have failed.”
“Between Heslenfeld unique photos of life on and off deck, Captain Klaas Gaastra (who looks exactly as a Captain should) writes the ships log, an engaging tale of near misses, whale encounters and ventures ashore.”
