"Thank you so much to Bessie Ellen and her owner, captain and crew. It was a long held dream of mine and my dream ca...

Morwenna was a Cornish saint of the 5th century, although the name also means mermaid in Celtic. Morwenna the Saint had a home near Bude at Hennacliff actually on the cliff face. The village has taken the name to become Morwenstow where a famous 19th Century Vicar the Robert Stephen Hawker dressed up as a Mermaid to encourage the tourist trade. He was a bit of character and wrote poetry under the influence of opium. There is still a hut he built into the cliff face and it is well worth a visit to Morwenstow for this and the views from it. Morwenna’s original small hermitage overlooked the Bristol Channel in a similar fashion.
As the origins of the name Morwenna also possibly mean maiden or white seas, it seemed an appropriate name for a Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter.
Bristol Launch
Launched in Bristol in the spring of 2009 Morwenna, the boat, is 45ft on deck (60ft with bowsprit) and is traditionally built by master shipwrights and highly trained craftsmen to create a modern classic. She has been built with English oak frames and larch planking, her weight of 22 tonnes displacement makes her capable of sailing anywhere, in any conditions.
Morwenna is rigged in the traditional fore and aft Gaff style. She has an enormous Douglas Fir mast and boom from the forest at Longleat in Wiltshire.
Traditional on the outside but very comfortable, light and airy on the inside with all mod cons and state of the art electronic navigation equipment.
