Voyage Description

Try Ocean Sailing - 20 Day Adventure Challenge

It is possible to live comfortably, and dare we say boringly, and read about storms on the high seas tucked up at home. Or you can join 66 barking mad tall ship sailors and find out what it is like to sail a square rigger across the Bay of Biscay in Winter. Two masted brig Stavros S Niarchos is an incredibly strong modern sail training ship with totally traditional rigging but built to high enough safety standards to be rated an auxillary coastguard vessel. She only really gets going in a force 7 or 8, so this may be a good voyage for the experienced sailor looking for a challenge.

Even on a 500 ton sailing ship there will be times when she will feel a very small vessel. There will be days when you may not see another vessel or sign of modern life –but usually there are ships and fishing vessels to spot. Look out for the world’s ocean wildlife – seabirds like gannets and storm petrels, Whales and large schools of dolphins. Weather systems will come and go, you may ride large waves and swell, or frustrating light winds; the ship has to be self-sufficient and take whatever the weather brings. The Bay of Biscay and further out into the Atlantic can be impressively rough with south westerlies and large waves which look more impressive at deck level than they do from a cross channel ferry. Water may rush across the deck and out the scuppers like in the old black and white photos by Newby and Villers, or you may find perfect blue seas, dry decks, sun and whirling seabirds overhead – even in November and December. Sun or wind tans are highly likely !

“ Classic Sailing gift vouchers are up there with Oxfam ‘buy a goat for Christmas’ as a present most likely to change a life.” Georgie D , Norfolk

Sailing on a Tall Ship
Climbing the masts to work the square sails is the essence of tall ship sailing. There are n’t many adrenalin buzzes in the world to beat stowing a sail 100ft above the white capped sea as you stand there balanced on a single foot rope. (OK; you do have a safety harness on and it's only if you volunteer to go aloft.)

Ships Crew

Upon arrival on sail training brig ‘Stavros S Niarchos’ you will sign on as ships crew. Before sailing every one undergoes an intensive safety training period so you can begin to handle a 500 ton sailing ship. There are 18 sails, included in the training is the chance to make your first climb aloft; it’s not compulsory and it is under expert supervision with plenty of encouragement.

On Deck
At deck level the challenge is to make sense of the myriad of ropes than run down to belaying pins all around the tall ship. As part of a team you could be hauling on a halliard that hoists a huge yard up the mast so that the sail can be set.  It may be an upper topsail, the main course or you may be alone finding the right buntlines to loosen for someone working high above you.

Real Tall Ship Rig
The ship’s rig is authentic, there are no winches, no windlass for the sails and so it takes a lot of physical effort and large numbers of people working together to set all the sails. Manoeuvring a tall ship is not simple under sail and there is huge amount of work to be done when you tack or wear ship. It all takes genuine teamwork, not a cliché in a management training manual.

Below decks
Stavros Niarchos is all traditional rigging but below deck you will find cots rather than hammocks, showers and air conditioning and a full service galley. She is fully equipped with all the latest navigation equipment and her officers are highly trained professional merchant seaman.

The Pleasure Principle
You would be surprised at the number of lasting relationships that develop during a voyage on a tall ship. I’m still in touch with three people I sailed with on my first voyage; it did so happen that I married one of them.

The sense of satisfaction and pride in your ship is a common but wonderful feature of tall ship sailing.

A tall ship voyage is not just for young and agile as these ships are built for those who believe in human power and seek to enjoy the pleasures of sailing in the old ways.

This voyage has an age restriction of 18-65. If you fall out of this category do not dispair. We may be able to find a similar voyage on a different vessel, or the same vessel but a slightly different voyage that will allow you to sail. Please ring us.)

Scotland

The Clyde is a big estuary and there are many interesting Isles on your way down river. Look out for Bute and the Isle of Arran, a fantastically formed basaltic island called Ailsa Craig. Heading almost due south through the North Channel on a clear day you can see both Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Irish Sea

Belfast is handy before you leave the North Channel and further down is the Isle of Man, Port Douglas and the Manx Cat.

On the Irish side Dublin and Dun Laoghaire are good possibilities and the crack is always good beside the waters of the Liffey, famous for its input into Guinness.

On the south east of Ireland you may call into Cork or Kinsale or you may cross to the Welsh coast may and look into Tremadog Bay and Harlech Castle.

Bristol Channel

Rounding the tip of Pembroke you will head eastwards up the Bristol Channel to Swansea a famous sea port.

La Coruna

The exact location of Stavros S Niarchos will be given in time for your voyage.

La Coruna is in Galicia in Northern Spain. Galicia is Spain's main seafaring region - three of its four provinces have an Atlantic coastline and its cuisine is based on superb seafood. The Galicians, who's origins are Celtic, are firecely proud of their culture and language.

This proud city and bustling seaport has played a sizeable role in Spanish Maritime history. Felipe II's doomed Spanish Armada sailed from here to invade England in 1588. The elegant town centre is laid out along an isthmus leading to a headland where Europe's oldest working lighthouse 'Torres De Hercules" still flashes. It was built by the Romans and tourists can climb its 242 steps - which should be easy for a fit tall ship sailor after 10 days at sea (maybe).

Airport

There is a airport at La Coruna.

You can fly back to many UK main and regional airports from La Coruna including all London airports, Bristol, Glasgow, Manchester, Teeside. Try Spanish national airline Iberia or Air Europa for relatively cheap winter flights.
