We recommend Stavros S Niarchos for its structured and very professional approach to training novices of all ages to crew square riggers. The primary purpose of this magnificent 200ft sail training ship is to take young people to sea for personal development. For many years the Stavros S Niarchos (and the ships she replaced - Schooners Malcolm Miller & Sir Winston Churchill) have also been providing an outlet for adventure for adults who might not want their character built anymore but do want a chance to experience the thrills and spills of sailing a square rigger. If you spend as long a week on a tall ship there is a strong likelihood it might change how your view life too, and it is not just teenagers that get motivated for the future and make friends for life on these ships. It is more than a holiday because it can be scarey and you do have to pull together in so many ways.
On a longer voyage there is more scope for passage making to further afield destinations. If you are sailing out of South Coast ports then you will probably have a chance to explore ashore in France or the Channel Islands. From the East Coast and London Amsterdam, Brussels, or Normany are likely destinations.
As you go further west some of the ports get smaller and anchorages are more likely. Fowey and Dartmouth have dramatic entrances and the arrival of a tall ship is always a major event for the town. The Scillies, Pembrokeshire, Southern Ireland and Lundy have anchorages if the weather is settled. Cork or Dublin have plenty of tempations ashore
Even if you live in mainland Europe, the current weakness of the British Pound Stirling makes these short voyages very affordable to via a cheap flight or via Eurostar trains or cross channel ferries. The working language on board is English, but once the ship starts sailing, everything is very practical and you learn by action and teamwork more than words.
You will be amazed how it all starts to make sense after more than 4 days and nights on board. Whilst the ships training programme assumes you are a newcomer to square rig sailing, these voyages are such good value they attract experienced tall ship sailors, professional seamen, coastguards and lifeboat crew, yachts men and women and traditional boat sailors who just want a bit of salty wind through their hair. Many come for a chance to climb the rigging on a proper tall ship or steer a 500 ton windjammer for the first time.
Also living on board for 4-7 nights gives you a real flavour of what a longer adventure might be like. Classic Sailing has some amazing sailing and wildlife expeditions on tall ships in Antarctica and the Arctic, Long ocean passages in the Pacific, South and North Atlantic, Tall ships races in the Mediterranean and Canadian Great Lakes so if you want a big adventure but need to test out your sea legs and stamina first then these are good mini challenges.
The Stavros Niarchos has many volunteer positions on board, so if you want to be recommended to come back as a vonluteer deckhand, watch leader, cooks mate, engineers mate or 3rd officer then you have more change of having your talents spotted on a week voyage than on a 2-3 day tall ship taster. At the end of the voyage the ships crew will reccommend anyone they think has the right mix of people and sailing skills to come back as a volunteer. There are no wages but lots of valuable career experience.
