A brilliant chance to try sailing on a Tall Ship as guest crew and a great gift or present at an affordable price.
Classic Sailing also sell gift vouchers which can be used on any vessel we promote. If your partner or friend has been romantising about running way to sea on a square rigged sailing ship for years, then a Classic Sailing gift voucher might just nudge them to give it a go.
Short Tall Ship Tasters in the UKThe best way to find your sea legs on a tall ship for the first time is to chose a coastal or island hopping voyage with plenty of short hops between ports. You will still probably get night sailing and a taste of offshore open seas, but there will be plenty of sail handling as you go in and out of port, and a welcome chance to enjoy a drink ashore with your new found friends, or wander ‘lonely as a cloud’ on solid land.
British Brig Stavros S Niarchos offers 2-4 day tall ship tasters from UK ports which are an ideal introduction to tall ship sailing without travelling too far afield.
Even if you live in mainland Europe, the current weakness of the British Pound Stirling makes these short voyages very affordable to via a cheap flight or via Eurostar trains or cross channel ferries. The working language on board is English, but once the ship starts sailing, everything is very practical and you learn by action more than words.
These are the shortest real voyages on a Tall Ship this year throughout our fleet. Whilst you can get fully involved with the sailing on a day sail, living on board a ship overnight with your new shipmates, standing an anchor watch for an hour or actually sailing through the night and having to get up for your 4 hour watch under the stars makes your feel more like a sailor at the end.
You will be amazed how it all starts to make sense after 3 or 4 days and nights on board. Whilst the ships training programme assumes you are a newcomer to square rig sailing, these voyages are such good value they attract experienced tall ship sailors, professional seamen, coastguards and lifeboat crew, yachts men and women and traditional boat sailors who just want a bit of salty wind through their hair. Many come for a chance to climb the rigging on a proper tall ship or steer a 500 ton windjammer for the first time.
Also living on board for 3-4 nights gives you a real flavour of what a longer adventure might be like. Classic Sailing has some amazing sailing and wildlife expeditions on tall ships in Antarctica and the Arctic, Long ocean passages in the Pacific, South and North Atlantic, Tall ships races in the Mediterranean and Canadian Great Lakes so if you want a big adventure but need to test out your sea legs and stamina first then these are good mini challenges.

To get to Kingswear and dartmouth from Brixham is a simple bus or taxi ride.
From the North
On the M5, continue past Exeter. The road becomes the A38 shortly thereafter.
Keep left and fork LEFT onto the A380, signposted for Torquay. Continue on that road to the end of the dual carriageway, straight over the large roundabout at Newton Abbot and through Kingskerswell.
Then turn RIGHT at the next roundabout onto the Ring Road, signposted for Paignton and Brixham.
Carry on past the end of the dual carriageway and through the outskirts of Paignton. Go straight over at a large crossroads following signs for Brixham, past Booker, Sainsbury’s and Bookham on the right. Turn right at the next T-junction on the A3022, signposted Brixham and Dartmouth.
Stay on that road, keeping to the left-hand lane at the traffic lights on the outskirts of Brixham. At the traffic lights in the centre of the town, by Brixham Theatre, turn left into Market Street and follow signs for the harbour. Turn right into The Strand, leaving the harbour on the left. The road turns away from the harbour then hard left up King Street. You will see the harbour below you on the left.
About 600 yards further on there are signs for a car park on the left, by the water’s edge. Go down the ramp, turn left and drive past the lifeboat station to the unloading bay by the marina building. You are allowed time to put your belongings in a trolley and bring them to the pontoon where the boat will be moored, which is about 200 yards past the marina office.
Parking
After checking in, take your car to the long-stay car park on the opposite side of the main road. The entrance is about 50 yards past the entrance to the waterside car park and marina area. Pay in advance at the marina office. You will be given a pass to display on your windscreen. The price is £7 per car per day. See Red Point in map above.
From the East, on the A303 the road becomes the A30 and joins the M5 just North of Exeter. Follow instructions as above.
From the West, stay on the A38 past Plymouth, exit at junction signposted to Totnes and Paignton by a shell garage. Follow the road into Totnes; turn Left at the first set of traffic lights down a hill, and then right at the T-junction. Go straight over the two roundabouts following signs to Paignton, and out of Totnes. As you enter Paignton turn right towards Brixham at the large junction, and follow directions as above.
