After the annual visit to Kiel Week (Kieler Woche) the ‘Oosterschelde’ is in an ideal position to cross the Baltic to explore the west coast of Sweden and the south coast of Norway. This is where the Scandinavians go for their summer holidays with long sunshine hours and often a more continental climate than UK coastal resorts.
The fresh and green nature, traditional red-white wooden houses, flowing streams and
other sights in harmony with nature: that is Sweden. On the west coast especially the beautiful beaches and the coast filled with islands that lure you in. From the Kielerfjord we sail fast Langeland onto the Big Belt. Underway we pass the enormous bridge that connects the Danish island Fyn and Sjælland. We first stop we will make will probably be in Halmstad, in the middle of the beautiful west coast of Sweden. Furthermore we will definitely make a stop in Skärhamm. This city was the homeport of the ‘Oosterschelde’ from 1954 until 1980, when it sailed under the name Sylvan under the Swedish flag.
Best Beaches in NorwayWe cross the Skagerak and arrive in Mandal, on the south coast of Norway (Sørlandet). Madal is known for its lovely 800 m beach backed by pine woods. It is one of Norway's white towns with their distinctive white clapperboard architecture. The south coast of Norway is a well kept secret. Many Norwegians have a holiday house on one of the many islands. The next stop is Egersund at the south west coast. Egersund has the biggest fishery harbour in Norway and was an important harbour in the time of the Vikings. As we proceed the coast becomes increasingly more mountainous and dramatic and before we end our voyage in Stavanger we still get a good impression of the impressive fjords for which Norway is known. There are some impressive headlands to sail around so the sailing may be more lively than you might think.
During the voyage much time will be spent sailing and you will explicitly be invited to participate. There will be enough time to go ashore and explore the landscape and local culture. Those who want to can even try to catch a fish while we are anchored. We will not have guides onboard, but our crew will organise and excursion or walk ashore on a regular basis.
The gaff sails on all three masts are huge and it is a long way up to release the gaskets and set oosterschelde's square sails. There is a Captain, Mate, couple of deck hands, engineer and chef so the ships guest crew will need to work hard as a team to race this impressive ship.
Oosterschelde is a very comfy ship - restored for adventure charter with a huge saloon with bar, piano, wood burning stove and library so if you have always fancied running away to sea for a few weeks, we can't think of a more stylish way to do it as hands on ships crew.
Both of Classic Sailing working directors have sailed on Oosterschelde in Jan 2011 so we can tell you what she is like to sail on if you give us a ring.
