Rhea in Turkey

A sailing holiday with Rhea in Turkey is a good guarantee of sun and steady sailing winds and you get to participate in as much of the sailing as you like.

Spectacular Coast
The Turkish Coastline is deeply indented with larger gulfs, tiny bays, tiny fishing villages and hundreds of islands. On the Islands and close ashore are ruins of castles, temples, monasteries and ancient palaces. You will always find a good restaurant or taverna for your evening meal ashore. Eating in Turkey has a very high reputation and you will find they often specialise in locally caught fresh seafood with plenty of other items on the menu.

South west is best
The south west coastline covered in all of Rheas voyages is outstanding for its beauty and variety. As you head out of one scenic bay and sail around the headland another beautiful bay with its own character and charm comes into view.

History
You will be sailing where the Persians, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and Ottoman Turks have all been before you. This huge cultural heritage adds greatly to the interest and uniqueness of your sailing holiday.

Experts
Skipper David and mate Penny will help you understand any thing you want to know about sailing Rhea. There expert local knowledge built up over ten years means they know all the best anchorages, restaurants and tavernas to make your voyage truly unique.

Karaca Söğüt – Orhaniye (The Gulf of Kos the Gulf of Doris) 18th – 26th September

Day 1. Join Rhea at Karaca Söğüt , on the Gulf of Kos (Gökova Korfezi), about 30 minutes from Marmaris, and spend the night there. It is an attractive bay surrounded by pines with a jetty and facilities sufficient for arrival and departure. There are minibuses from here to Marmaris.

Day 2. Move off to nearby Cleopatra’s Island, famed for its white sand imported by Anthony for Cleopatra, it also has a pretty little overgrown amphitheatre, and then sail west up the gulf to Çökertme, a bay with a hamlet built on a sandspit, with steep mountains behind. Dine at Captain Ibrahim’s.

Day 3. A long close reach to Mersincik, dinner on board at a serene little inlet off a large unspoilt bay.

Day 4. Around Cape Krio on the end of the Datça Peninsula to visit Knidos, the extensive ruins of a city and ports, dating from before Christ through the Byzantine era, it is famous for the statue of Aphrodite. Then along the coast to Ova Buku (Mesudiye), an attractive bay with a beach and some restaurants including Ogun’s – a great atmosphere and quite different, delicious food.

Day 5. A shorter day to Datça, a small lively port with good night life, shops and restaurants.

Day 6. Downwind to the Gulf of Simi (Sömbeki Korfezi) with Bozburun, former centre of the Turkish sponge fishing industry and now an area of wooden boat building. In the approach are islands with many ruins and to the south is the large bay of Sögüt Liman with the fishing village of Sögüt Köyü.

Day 7. Around Cape Apolstoli and down the beautiful Gulf of Doris (Hisarönu Korfezi) to Orhaniye (Keçi Buku), a forested steep inlet with a ruined castle on an island and a long sand spit sticking out into the bay. There are regular minibuses to Marmaris and sufficient facilities for joining and departing yachts.

Day 8. Depart Rhea from Orhaniye, about 25 minutes from Marmaris

Bodrum

History
Homer a resident of Bodrum describes Bodrum as "The land of eternal blue". Throughout history of Bodrum, known as Halicarnassos in ancient times, has always been fought over and people have been unwilling to share its beauty with others.

Bodrum has been the cradle of several civilizations. Down through the ages it has suffered from the countless invasions of those coming from the Aegean islands and has been important to all those powers wishing to dominate the Aegean. Halicarnassos (Bodrum) was an important city in the Caria civilization which was located between its much more powerful neighbours Lykia and Ionia. The region boasts such greats as the historian Heredotus, history's first woman admiral Artemisia I, and the just-as-skilled Artemisia II as well as artists like Leachares and Shepas.

Bodrum experienced the dominance of various civilizations throughout the history such as Persians, Mecedonians, Roman Empire and Byzantines. Byzantines lost their power in Anatolian region after they were defeated by the Seljuk Ruler Alpaslan at Malazgirt in 1071. Rhodian knights had constructed the present Bodrum castle and established their rule over the region. Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent on his military expedition to Rhodes conquered Bodrum together with Rhodes and added them to the territory of Ottoman Empire.

Today
Built on a peninsula formed by the meeting of the eastern and western harbours, Bodrum, with its narrow streets winding down to the sea, is famous for its castle, its world-renowned yachts, its shipyards and the dazzling white houses and tombs lining the shores of its two harbours.
